Strays Who Found Us

Here in Tennessee there is a critical problem with strays.  Coming from New Jersey I was not familiar with the problems with the dog population in Tennessee.  You cannot drive into town without seeing several strays on the side of the road looking for a meal.  It is not uncommon, because of so many homeless dogs, to see the after effect of what can happen to dogs on the roadways and cars traveling at high speeds.

Even some of the dogs who actually have homes are left outside to fend for themselves, looking everywhere they can for their next meal and a warm dry place to rest.  There are a lot of dog owners who do care for their dogs and take care of them, but there are far too many who don't.

You can always tell the real die hard animal lovers, as they are the ones who drive around with dog food, dog biscuits, or some other type of dog treat in their cars in hopes of helping out a hungry stray.  My husband, Joe and I always have a supply of dog food and dog biscuits in our vehicles, as well as an assortment of collars and leashes "just in case".

If you are looking for a good companion and one that is not as big as a mastiff, why not think about adopting one of our strays.  Once a stray finds us, we take them in and have them checked by our vet, Dr. Bell.  We also have them vaccinated and spayed or neutered.  They are put on a regiment of heartworm preventative and flea/tick preventative.

Taking in homeless dogs began for us on a Sunday morning when we were on our way out, right down the road from our farm, we saw 5 little pups sitting in the woods.  Of course we had to stop, scoop them all up and take them home.  These 5 precious pups were about 6 - 7 weeks old and were obviously "dropped off".   Those 5 little pups - Sailor, Tink, Cindy, Chubbs, and Cinder - gave so much to us, we are happy to report they were adopted.

So, take a look at our wonderful strays.

Rosie and Pups

Lady with pup "Bear"

Rosie had 7 puppies, which we are now helping her to care for. The father (Malcolm) is a resident black lab. Both Rosie and Malcolm are real sweathearts. Here's Lady and her baby.  You can see one of the bite marks on the pups side from whatever was trying to carry him away from his mother.  He's doing really really well.  Lady is a wonderful sweet girl and a good mother.  She's timid, but loves to cuddle with me.  Bear is now a month old and getting around beautifully.  He still hasn't made a sound though.  The kittens love him - I think they think he's a cat.  Especially Miss Kitty (the gray/white kitten), she LOVES everything and is fearless.  Bear is shown with Sassy in the last photo - they are best friends.

Jack and Jill

Sailor, Chubbs, Tink, Cinder, and Cindy.

Debbie

Jack and Jill came to us when a neighbor witnessed Jill being hit by a car. Jill recovered nicely and both have been such a joy, helping with our Mastiff puppy socialization. These 5 precious pups were about 6 - 7 weeks old and were obviously "dropped off". Debbie found us when we went to the dump to drop off the trash.

Sassafras
 (aka Sassy)
Bruno Lizzy, Petey & Smokey
Sassy is an absolutely wonderful dog.  Walking her cracks me up cause you don't even know she's at the end of the lead, not like walking our BIG guys.  She's being treated for heartworm (luckily very mild), so she'll be with me for the next several months until that is cleared up and then we can spay her. She is shown in the second picture with Bear.
We found him running down the street in town, so of course we scooped him up and brought him home.  He is such a wonderful boy, gets along with the cats and other dogs.  He's really put weight on in the 2 weeks we've had him.  He's up for adoption - up to date on his vaccinations and he has been neutered.
Lizzy, Petey and Smokey
We're fostering these pups for a local shelter until they
are adopted.

Chewy

Squirrel

Rita (Heeler)

Elvis (Hound)

Chewy is another stray - what a cutie. Squirrel was taken to the vet by some kids because her mom had been found dead at the high school with three puppies. We brought her and her two litter mates home to give them a chance at life. Unfortunately only Squirrel made it. Meet Rita (heeler) and Elvis (hound).  They're so sweet and loving.  We actually found them at Sonic when I stopped to get a cup of coffee.  The people there knew the dogs and the previous owner who dropped the dogs off in town cause he moved.
